Use the data compiled in the previous steps to answer the following questions. Answer these in a narrative format.  You may find it useful to also create a bar graph of the data from the census before 1879 and the census after 1879.  You might also use several census dates before and after 1879 in order to create a line graph showing immigration patterns over time.  In these ways you can compare the immigration patterns before and after the Exoduster period.

For the census years 1870 or 1875

  • How many African-Americans immigrated from each former slave holding state state to the local area of study?
  • How many African-Americans immigrated from each former non-slave holding state state to the local area of study?
  • What percentage of the total population of the local area of study is the African-American population?
  • What is the total White population of the local area of study?
  • What percentage of the total populaton of the local area of study is the White population?
  • Does any evidence show that immigrants were settling the local area or were they staying only temporarily?
  • Do any patterns emerge concerning the occupations of those immigrating?
  • Using primary or secondary sources determine what were some of the reactions of the local community to immigration during this time.
